Whitetail Facts
Whitetail deer are one of the most widespread and recognizable deer species in North America, found throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They are named for the white underside of their tail, which is often raised as a warning signal when danger is near.
Relatively small compared to other big game animals, mature bucks can weigh up to 300 pounds and stand about three feet tall at the shoulder. Whitetails have reddish-brown coats in summer that shift to grayish-brown in winter. As herbivores, they feed on grasses, leaves, and twigs, adapting their diet to the seasons. During the fall rut, bucks compete for does by marking territory, making vocalizations, and sparring with rival males. Valued for both their ecological role and hunting tradition, whitetail deer remain a favorite among hunters and wildlife enthusiasts across North America.
