Premium Hungarian Racka Sheep in Wisconsin | Driftless Ranch

If you’re looking to add an incredibly unique, conversation-starting mount to your trophy room, the Hungarian Racka sheep stands completely in a league of its own. Native to the plains of Eastern Europe and boasting a history that stretches back centuries, the Racka is famous for one defining feature: its unmistakable, straight-up corkscrew horns.

Finding a mature Racka ram traditionally meant searching far and wide for specialized exotic breeders. Today, Driftless Ranch offers a world-class Hungarian Racka experience right in the beautiful, rugged bluff country of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.

The Hungarian Racka: A Truly Unique Trophy

Most exotic sheep — like the Texas Dall or Black Hawaiian — grow horns that curl back and around their faces. The Hungarian Racka defies this completely, growing horns that spiral straight upward in a tight, V-shaped formation.

The Trophy: A mature Racka ram grows long, twisting, corkscrew-style horns that can reach impressive lengths of two feet or more. Because the horns grow upward rather than curling outward, a shoulder mount requires vertical space and immediately draws the eye in any trophy collection.

Distinctive Appearance: Racka sheep possess a thick, coarse fleece that naturally protects them from harsh elements. They typically come in two distinct color phases: a dark, solid black that will often fade to a reddish-brown at the tips, or a lighter white and tan variation.

The Challenge: Don’t let their somewhat domestic history in Europe fool you. On the expansive, rugged acreage of our ranch, these rams are highly alert, wary, and possess a strong flocking instinct. When a flock of Racka spooks, they move swiftly, requiring you to remain entirely out of sight during the approach.

How It Works

Step 1: Purchase Your Animal

Customers purchase the animal directly before any processing or delivery occurs. Payments can be made via cash, check, or credit card, and ownership transfers at the time of purchase.

Step 2: Plan and Harvest Your Animal

After purchasing your Hungarian Racka ram, you’ll choose the harvesting method that best suits your needs:

  • Field Harvest — Harvest the animal yourself on our property using a firearm, bow and arrow, or muzzleloader. Our team provides expert guidance, complete field dressing, skinning, and caping of your ram for your taxidermist.
  • Live Delivery to a Meat Processor — We coordinate transportation to your chosen licensed processor.
  • Live Delivery to Your Own Facility — We arrange delivery directly to your location.

Each method requires planning and agreement in advance. Our team handles the details and ensures full compliance with Wisconsin regulations, making the process seamless and straightforward.

A Strategic Midwest Spot-and-Stalk

For those choosing a field harvest, the Driftless Region provides a fantastic mix of open-field glassing and timber-edge stalking. The rolling hills, steep limestone outcroppings, and deep hardwood valleys of our Wisconsin property give these rams plenty of natural cover to utilize when pressured.

The Strategy: This pursuit requires patience and strategy. You and your professional guide will spend time glassing the edges of the timber and the open grazing slopes. Because they rely heavily on the safety of the herd, picking out a mature ram from the group and waiting for a clear, ethical shot requires careful positioning and strict awareness of the wind direction.

The Shot: The Racka is a sturdy but smaller-framed exotic sheep. We recommend standard mid-range rifles like a .243, 6.5 Creedmoor, or .270 for a clean harvest. For the dedicated bowhunter, this provides an excellent opportunity to test your spot-and-stalk skills, requiring a silent approach to get within archery range before the flock detects your presence.
